Suspected bandits have attacked Kajiji community in Shagari Local Government Area of Sokoto State, killing a humanitarian worker, Lydia Chinenye Nwankwo, and a police inspector. The armed men reportedly ambushed the victims on Tuesday, opening fire on their vehicle and killing the aid worker on the spot.

The humanitarian team was returning from field operations in the remote community when they came under heavy attack. The Sokoto State Police Command confirmed the incident, stating that an officer paid the supreme sacrifice during the encounter.

The victim’s sister, Chisom Nwankwo, announced the news to the general public in a social media post on Thursday. Colleagues, mourning the deceased, described her as a dedicated professional committed to serving vulnerable populations in hard-to-reach areas.

Meanwhile, the Public Relations Officer of the Sokoto State Police Command, DSP Ahmed Rufai, stated that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Shagari LGA had briefed the state headquarters about the attack stating that investigations are ongoing to ascertain the full extent of the casualties.

“I just spoke with the DPO in charge of Shagari now, who confirmed the attack on some communities in the local government…We are still on it. I cannot give details now until I gather my information about the incident”, DSP Rufai said.

According to reports, the security situation in Shagari and its environs remains tense after the attack. Residents have urged the state government and security agencies to deploy additional personnel and increase joint operations to mitigate further attacks.
