Amnesty International has stepped in to demand that Madonna University immediately reverse the expulsion and suspension of 15 nursing students who were punished over a viral TikTok dance video.

The controversy began when a short clip of the students participating in a popular social media trend known as the “Gen Z nurses” challenge, dancing on a staircase, a bus, and a hospital waiting area.

In response to the viral clip, Madonna University management took severe disciplinary action. They expelled a final-year student, identified as Mercy, and handed suspensions to 14 other 500-level nursing students.

On Thursday, October 8, Amnesty International took to its official X account to openly criticize the university’s actions. The global human rights body described the punishments as completely out of proportion to the students’ actions.

“The expulsion and suspension are disproportionate…The university should prioritise dialogue and mediation”, Amnesty stated.

The human rights organization warned that the sanctions violate the students’ basic rights to education and freedom of expression. They stressed that ending a student’s academic progress over a social media trend creates an unfair culture of fear and silence.

Meanwhile, student unions including the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) and the Nigerian Universities Nursing Students’ Association (NUNSA) have appealed to the university management to show clemency, stressing that expelling them at the final stage of their study would permanently ruin their professional futures.
