Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has denied claims that he ordered the arrest of people protesting with the “Tinubu Must Go” slogan, stating his warnings were meant strictly for local gangs and criminals threatening peace in the state.
The governor made this statement after the African Democratic Congress (ADC) through it Presidential Campaign Council on Sunday accused him of threatening to arrest anyone protesting using the “Tinubu Must Go” slogan in the state.
However, the spokesperson to the governor, Dauda Iliya, in response dismissed the allegations on Sunday night, explaining that the statement of the governor during a recent media chat in Maiduguri were completely taken out of context by political actors.
According to Iliya, Zulum was specifically addressing a troubling rise in local gang violence, illegal abortions, kidnappings, and phone snatching. Iliya expressed disappointment in the ADC for relying on what he called “unprofessionally written news report” to score cheap points.
The state government has recently launched a new Anti-Vices security unit, to flush out local gangs, which officials say has already drastically reduced crime in Maiduguri.
