Eight members of the Zamfara State House of Assembly have resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), over worsening insecurity in rural communities and 32 months of unpaid salaries.

The lawmakers announced their collective resignation in a joint statement on Sunday, October 4, 2026, accusing the party and the state administration of failing to protect residents in rural areas and turning a blind eye to persistent security threats.

The eight assembly members who resigned include Hon. Aliyu Ango Kagara (Talata Mafara South), Hon. Ibrahim Tukur Bakura (Bakura), Hon. Faruk Musa Dosara (Maradun I), Hon. Barrister Bashir Abubakar Masama (Bukkuyum North), Hon. Muktaru Nasiru Kaura (Kaura North), Hon. Nasiru Abdullahi (Maru North), Hon. Bashar Bello (Bungudu West), and Hon. Bashar Aliyu (Gummi I).

The lawmakers also raised serious allegations regarding their welfare. Speaking on behalf of the group, Hon. Kagara disclosed that they have gone nearly three years without receiving their official pay and entitlements as elected representatives.

Kagara stated that they could no longer justify staying in the party while their constituents suffered:

“Our constituents in rural areas who voted us into power to address their security concerns were not being given any attention…This is our 32 months without salary, allowances, and other entitlements as honourable members”, Kagara.

The group has not yet announced which political party they plan to join next.

Dawn Herald gathered that all eight lawmakers were already serving a suspension from the state legislature following an alleged attempt to impeach the Assembly Speaker about a year ago.
