IGP deploys DIG, Commissioners to rescue 20 kidnapped corps members

The Inspector-General of Police has deployed senior officers to Imo State to lead the rescue mission for 20 prospective NYSC members kidnapped along the Owerri-Onitsha road.

Dawn Herald reported that the kidnappers abducted the prospective corps members and several other passengers near Umunoha in Imo State on Thursday, October 1, 2026.

Following the incident, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu ordered the Deputy Inspector-General of Police for Operations, Shehu Nadada, to take charge of the situation.

Force Public Relations Officer CSP Anietie Iniedu confirmed the deployment in a statement on Friday, that the DIG Nadada arrived in the state with two Commissioners of Police to assess the scene and facilitate the release of the kidnapped victims.

The senior officers have deployed extra tactical teams, who are currently working directly with the Imo State Police Command and other security agencies, to track down the suspects.

“The Nigeria Police Force is committed to securing the safe rescue of the 20 abducted persons and will sustain the operation until the mission is successfully concluded,” DIG Nadada assured the public.

The police urged residents to stay calm and share any useful information with security agencies, promising to keep all tips completely confidential.
