Public servants declare 3-day warning strike over economic hardship

Public service workers across Nigeria will commence a three-day warning strike starting midnight on Friday, October 2, to protest over the economic hardship and soaring living costs.

The Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNPSNC) issued the directive to all federal, state, and local government workers, ordering a nationwide shutdown of public services through Sunday, October 4.

The union leaders took the decision after the federal government failed to respond to a formal petition sent to President Bola Tinubu on September 21.

The council is demanding a reduction in petrol prices to N500 per litre, an emergency wage award for public servants, and the quick inauguration of a committee to negotiate a new national minimum wage.

JNPSNC National Secretary Olowoyo Gbenga, in an official circular directing union leaders to mobilize workers immediately, described the economic situation as unbearable for average families.

“All public servants in the services of Federal, State and Local Governments are to join the warning strike because an injury to one is an injury to all, most especially as all workers and their dependants are groaning terribly under the present economic hardship”, Gbenga.

Unless the government steps in with a last-minute agreement before midnight on Friday, administrative operations and public services across all three tiers of government will grind to a halt over the weekend.
