Police in Borno State have arrested and charged five men for allegedly printing and wearing T-shirts with the inscription “Tinubu Must Go.”

According to a police report, verified by the court, officers picked up the men on September 25 around the West End Roundabout in Maiduguri.

The suspects, Baba Aji Gremami (44), Mustapha Abba Yemen (28), Abbacha Mohammed Ali (32), Adam Umar Gubio (21), and Abdulhamid Mohammed (21), were charged before Chief Magistrate Court I in Maiduguri on Tuesday.

Police prosecutors accused the group of criminal conspiracy, inciting violence, breach of public peace, and thuggery under the Borno State Penal Code.

The defense lawyers immediately filed bail applications to secure their release from custody, as all five defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The arrests have raised criticism from concerned Nigerians, several organizations and human rights advocates.

Amnesty International criticized the police action, calling the detention arbitrary and the charges bizarre. The organization emphasized that wearing clothes to express peaceful political opinions is a basic human right, not a crime.

The presiding judge adjourned the matter to October 6, 2026, to rule on the bail application, while the main trial is scheduled to begin on October 26.
