President Tinubu returns to Nigeria after month-long trip

President Bola Tinubu returned to Nigeria on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, landing at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos around 6:00 p.m. after spending a full month on vacation in Europe.

Tinubu left Abuja on August 30 for a three-week break. When he did not return on schedule, the delay raised questions among citizens and opposition parties who demanded official updates on his location.

The delay led the African Action Congress (AAC) to file a lawsuit questioning the failure of the president to transfer power to Vice-President Kashim Shettima. Other political groups, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC), also pressed the presidency for updates on his whereabouts.

While addressing concerns raised by Nigerians, presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga stressed that Tinubu was in good health. He added that in today’s era of globalization and digital connectivity, the president could govern Nigeria from anywhere in the world.

Onanuga also explained that Tinubu flew straight to Lagos instead of Abuja to honour the memory of the late Chief MKO Abiola.

The president will spend the coming days in Lagos to attend the premiere of a movie honoring Abiola at the Wole Soyinka National Theatre on October 1, while holding political consultations before returning to the State House in Abuja.
