Gunmen have attacked a mining site in the Rakum community of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area in Plateau State, leaving at least three women dead and one person injured.
The incident happened on Monday evening at about 4:30 pm when the armed men stormed the site and immediately opened fire on the workers before fleeing the area.
Rwang Tengwong, the spokesperson for the Berom Youth Moulders-Association (BYM), confirmed the killing, stressing that the attack has caused panic among residents and called on security agencies for intervention.
“We are calling on the security operatives to immediately go after the perpetrators and ensure that those responsible are arrested and brought to justice”, Tengwong stated.
John Silas, a member of the Rakum community, also confirmed the incident. He explained that the victims were simply going about their daily business when the gunmen struck. He appealed to the government for intervention:
“We are deeply worried because people should be able to go about their legitimate businesses without being attacked”, he said.
Meanwhile, the Plateau State government has urged citizens to remain calm, and that they are working closely with security agencies to track down the attackers, protect lives, and restore peace to the troubled communities.
