Gunmen have reportedly shot and killed at least five miners and injured two others during an attack at a mining site in Plateau State on Saturday.
The attack happened on Saturday around 1:00 PM in Marit village, located in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of the state despite a curfew, set earlier by the state government on Barkin Ladi and two other local government areas to help security forces control the wave of violence.
The spokesman for the Berom Youth Moulders-Association (BYM), Rwang Tengwong, confirmed the casualties, urging security agencies to take urgent steps to protect local communities from future attack.
“It is a very sad and painful development. Our people are once again mourning the loss of lives to violence,” Tengwong said.
Just a day before this incident, the State Commissioner for Information, Joyce Ramnap, issued a statement condemning the violence in affected communities and urging residents to remain calm and law-abiding.
However, the state recorded major victories in the Qua’an-Pan Local Government Area, where a combined team of security operatives and local hunters successfully fought off a separate attack by suspected terrorists in Latok community, forcing the gunmen to retreat.
