Veteran Nigerian entertainer and social critic, Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has shared his thoughts on his two daughters’ decisions to identify as lesbians, stating that his primary concern is their happiness.
In an exclusive interview with Saturday Beats, the 73-year-old entertainer explained that his reaction was guided by love and the understanding that parents cannot dictate the lives of their adult children.
Charly Boy disclosed that both his youngest and eldest daughters are lesbians. He admitted that accepting his youngest daughter’s sexuality years ago was initially difficult because she hadn’t started a family, unlike his older daughter who already had children.
“I was trying to educate people that you have no control over the life of a 50-something-year-old woman. This is the same woman who gave me six grandchildren and a great-grandson…If she decides that she no longer likes men and prefers to be a lesbian, so be it. My only concern is for her to be happy”, Charly Boy.
He emphasized that his desire is to maintain a peaceful and loving relationship with his children.
“As long as they are standing on their own two feet and not asking me for money, their life is their life. At the end of the day, it all comes down to love”, he said.
Charly Boy also said modern parenting, especially with Millennials and Gen Zs, requires advice and logic rather than force or commands.
During the interview, the entertainer also discussed his close friendship with former President Olusegun Obasanjo, describing him as a sincere friend and a reliable father figure whom he regularly consults whenever he needs help navigating difficult situations and figuring things out.
