A 38-year-old university graduate, Mike Oje, has lost his life after a neighbour brutally beat him for playfully hugging a three-year-old child in Mowe, Ogun State.
The tragic event started after a simple, harmless interaction between Oje and his neighbour’s toddler. According to reports, Oje was affectionately hugging and playing with the young child but the child’s father became furious and accused the young man of engaging in an inappropriate play.
The confrontation turned violent when the father reportedly used a bamboo stick to beat Oje repeatedly. The assault made Oje collapsed on the spot and was later pronounced dead due to the injuries he sustained during the attack.
The suspect immediately fled the community with his family, after realising the gravity of his actions and is currently hiding in an unknown location.
Oje was a university graduate who held a degree in guidance and counselling.
Speaking to journalists in Abeokuta on Friday, the police spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed the tragic event by telling the public how the attack happened.
“Upon the father’s reaction, neighbours reportedly picked up a bamboo stick and started to beat Oje. Due to the severe beating, the victim allegedly collapsed during the assault and later died from injuries sustained”, DSP Babaseyi
The police has assured the public that they are currently looking for the fleeing suspect to ensure justice is served.
