The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has recovered and handed back N84 million to Ekhahon Abraham, an Edo State businessman who fell victim to a real estate scam.
Operatives at the EFCC’s Benin Zonal Directorate retrieved the funds from a woman, Anita Eborome, following a fraud petition filed by the businessman.
Dawn Herald gathered that Eborome collected the money under the pretense of selling a 115ft by 135ft plot of land to Abraham in a community in Edo state, which after making the payment, he went ahead to build a perimeter fence around the property. Shortly after, a man claiming to be the rightful owner of the land showed up and pulled the entire fence down. When Abraham realized he had been duped and demanded a full refund, Eborome began evading him, leaving him with no other option, but to report the case to the EFCC.
Investigators from the EFCC, tracked the transaction and confirmed that Eborome received the money and simply diverted it for her personal use.
The acting EFCC Zonal Director, Sa’ad Hanafi, while presenting the recovered bank draft on Friday, assured the public that the agency will keep doing its job professionally and will continue to deny fraudsters the chance to reap where they did not sow.
