The journey to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations officially began on Thursday with eight opening matches played across the continent, as Nigeria prepares to take on Madagascar today in Uyo.
The Super Eagles will welcome Madagascar to the Godswill Akpabio Stadium for their Group L opener, with a kick-off set for 5:00 PM Nigerian time.
Nigeria shares Group L with Madagascar, Guinea-Bissau, and co-hosts Tanzania. Only the top-placed team among Nigeria, Madagascar, and Guinea-Bissau will earn a ticket to the main tournament, because Tanzania already has an automatic spot as a host nation.
After Friday’s home match, Nigeria will fly out to face Guinea-Bissau for their second group game on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Thursday’s opening fixtures delivered plenty of action across Africa. Ivory Coast comfortably defeated Ghana 2-0, while Cameroon picked up a 3-1 win over Comoros. The biggest game of the day was the game between Zimbabwe and Sierra Leone as Zimbabwe fought their way from two goals down at half-time to defeat Sierra Leone 3-2.
