Six people have been confirmed dead and four others hospitalized on Tuesday, December 30, at approximately 8:35 p.m, after a passenger boat capsized in Lagos, State.

The vessel, operated by Savvy Marine, was traveling from the Ilashe Beach House when it ran into trouble near the Nigerdock axis of Igbologun water channel.

Night travel on the waterways is strictly prohibited by law due to poor visibility and the presence of submerged hazards. This incident occurred nearly an hour after the daily 7:00 p.m. curfew for passenger vessels, thereby violating the ban on night travel in the inland waterways of the state.

A joint operation by the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) and the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) rescued four survivors, who are currently in stable condition. Investigations revealed the boat collided with a submerged object, causing it to capsize.

Authorities have launched a full investigation into the operator, Savvy Marine, to determine if negligence played a role and also to enforce safety compliance for the New Year’s Day celebrations.
