President Bola Tinubu has admitted that the escalating insecurity in Northern Nigeria remains the deepest concern of his administration, stressing that the crisis is paralyzing national progress.
Speaking in Kaduna on Saturday, the President described the situation as a “jarring rupture” in the social ethics of the nation that keeps him up at night.
The President’s assessment was delivered by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, who represented him at the 25th Anniversary (Silver Jubilee) of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF).
Addressing northern elders and stakeholders, Tinubu acknowledged that his administration inherited “multilayered” security challenges, which he attributed to economic stagnation and widening educational deficits.
He stressed that the region is currently facing one of the gravest tests of its endurance, characterized by the corrosion of security and the erosion of communal values. However, he rallied hope, by pointing to the upcoming economic milestones like the inauguration of the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano Superhighway and the rollout of crude oil from the Kolmani fields as signs that the region’s potential is not lost.
Nothing troubles me more gravely than the security crisis bedevilling Nigeria, especially Northern Nigeria. Affliction in any part of the country is a setback for every part. We cannot prosper when one limb of the national body is paralysed. We fail the day we sleep comfortably while millions sleep with empty bellies, the day fear becomes a permanent companion for travellers moving from one village to another – President Tinubu
The ACF Board of Trustees Chairman, Alhaji Bashir Dalhatu, expressed frustration over the surge of insecurity in the region, despite military efforts, giving reference to the recent televised slaughter of a Brigadier General and the mass abduction of students in Kebbi and Niger states.
All these are happening despite the seeming best efforts of our military and others. Endless reports of wanton killings, televised slaughter of military officers, mass abduction of school children… are totally incompatible with the security system designed to specifically prevent it – Dalhatu
