‎At least 16 local vigilante members were killed and 42 residents were kidnapped in a series of bandit attacks across communities in the Mashegu Local Government Area of Niger State between November 9 and November 13, 2025.

‎The attacks involved ambushes on the local defense forces and a mass abduction from a mosque, forcing many villagers to flee their homes and resulting in the desertion of several communities.

‎On Sunday, the bandits first invaded Dutsen Magaji village and abducted 22 people. Three vigilantes were killed during a subsequent gun battle with the attackers.
‎Attackers returned on Thursday, November 13, at dawn, surrounding a mosque in Magama village during early morning prayers and abducting more than 20 people. Another ambush targeting pursuing vigilantes resulted in the death of 13 more vigilantes and the injury of several others.

‎The violence has sacked many residents of villages like Dutsen Magaji, Borin-Aiki, Gidan Ruwa, and Magama, from their homes, leaving many fleeing for safety to nearby towns and distant communities.

‎The Press Secretary to the Mashegu LGA Chairman, Isah Ibrahim Bokuta, confirmed the killings, describing the slain vigilantes as heroes who sacrificed their lives in defence of their communities. The State Police Command is yet to issue an official statement concerning this, as at the time this report was published.
