Former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has declared the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) “dead” in Ekiti, stating that all its governorship aspirants are “fooling themselves”.
He praised the incumbent Governor Biodun Oyebanji of the All Progressives Congress (APC), predicting a landslide victory for him in the June 20, 2026 governorship election.
Speaking to journalists in Ado Ekiti, Fayose lamented the absence of a viable PDP structure in the state, questioning the presence of party members and meetings. He described the party as “totally moribund”, linking its state-level decline to the national situation.
If there is hope, you can cling to it and bring life out of it. But there is no hope. The PDP is dead here in Ekiti – Fayose
He added that the state lacks credible PDP gatherings and that many current aspirants are individuals he once nurtured politically. Despite his critique, Fayose clarified that he remains a PDP member but will support Oyebanji’s re-election.
The Independent National Electoral Commission has scheduled the Ekiti governorship election for June 20, 2026. While Oyebanji is the APC candidate, four individuals, Dr. Wole Oluyede, Mrs. Funmi Ogun, Mr. Funso Ayeni, and Peter Obafemi, are contesting for the PDP ticket.
In response to Fayose’s comments, Ekiti PDP Chairman Tunji Odeyemi called the declarations “unfortunate”, defending the party’s viability and affirming that a transparent primary will produce a strong candidate to challenge Oyebanji next year.
