Residents of Kasuwan-Garba town in Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State, on Saturday evening, took the law into their own hands, brutally killing a woman suspected of making offensive comments about Prophet Muhammad.

The victim, identified as Amaye, was a local food seller. According to witnesses, she allegedly made hurtful statements about the Prophet inside her eatery after a customer jokingly mentioned marrying her based on the Prophet’s customs. The incident quickly escalated tensions among the townsfolk.

An insider who requested anonymity revealed that Amaye was initially brought before the District Head’s palace for mediation, but she was later handed over to the security forces for further inquiry. Despite law enforcement’s efforts, an angry crowd overpowered the officers and carried out a violent attack, ultimately setting her on fire.

The Chairman of Mariga LGA, Abbas Adamu Kasuwan-Garba, confirmed that peace has returned although the community remains shaken by the brutal episode. Meanwhile, the Niger State Police spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, stated that police reinforcements arrived only after the fatal assault had occurred. He assured the public that steps are ongoing to apprehend those responsible and ensure they face legal consequences.

Authorities urge citizens to report concerns through proper channels rather than resorting to violence, to prevent future tragedies.
