At the 102nd National Executive Committee meeting held on Monday in Abuja, the Peoples Democratic Party confirmed Umar Iliya Damagum’s continued leadership as its acting national chairman.
His role began in March 2023 after the suspension of former chairman Iyorchia Ayu.
The political gathering at the party’s Abuja headquarters ratified Damagum’s position, maintaining stability amid internal reshuffling. Since assuming the role, Damagum has provided interim leadership after Ayu’s suspension. Prior to stepping into this responsibility, he was the national deputy chairman for the northern region, giving him a wealth of experience within the party hierarchy.
Damagum’s leadership period has been marked by efforts to reconcile differing factions and oversee a smooth operation across Nigeria’s diverse regions.
The decision is important in sustaining the momentum Damagum brought since his interim appointment, ensuring that the party’s organizational structure remains intact during a critical political phase.
The NEC’s endorsement sets the stage for continued efforts to unify the party, with many anticipating further announcements on strategic plans to bolster PDP’s position nationwide.
