Gunmen assassinated Aondoakaa Yaiyol, former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chairman and Nigeria Hunters and Forest Security Services commander in Tarka, Benue State, on Friday night, June 20, 2025.
The attack occurred in Tarka Local Government Area, where Yaiyol was shot at close range by assailants who arrived on a motorcycle, according to Chief Joseph Har, Special Adviser to Governor Hyacinth Alia on Security. The gunmen fired sporadically, supported by two cars, to scare off bystanders before fleeing. This follows a tragic pattern, as Yaiyol’s wife was killed and his house burned in a similar attack last year.
PDP State Publicity Secretary Tim Nyior confirmed Yaiyol’s death, noting his prior role as Tarka PDP chairman and his recent position with the Nigeria Hunters and Forest Security Services. Har suggested the killing may be linked to a feud with a criminal previously imprisoned for the attack on Yaiyol’s wife, indicating a possible revenge motive.
Police Public Relations Officer DSP Udeme Edet confirmed the incident and stated that officers tracked the suspect to a hideout, but he escaped. The police are actively pursuing the suspect, with Edet assuring imminent apprehension to address the ongoing security concerns in Benue.
