INEC to brief Nigerians as 2027 elections countdown hits 100 days

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will hold a press conference on Tuesday to update Nigerians as the countdown to the 2027 general elections remains 100-days.

INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, (SAN), says it is time to brief the public on its readiness, after it national stakeholders’ meeting that will take place at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre (BAT-ICC) tomorrow in Abuja. The meeting will focus discussing key issues like the voters’ register, logistics, candidate nominations, and the steps being taken to protect the voting process. This will be his first general election since he took over the office in 2025.

The commission has fixed the presidential and National Assembly elections for 16 January 2027, while the governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections will follow on 6 February 2027.

According to the commission, eighteen political parties and it candidates, featuring 16 men and two women are cleared for the race. Major candidates include President Bola Tinubu of the APC, Atiku Abubakar of the ADC, and Peter Obi of the NDC.

Adedayo Oketola, spokesperson of INEC chairman, stated that the meeting aims to promote transparency, public communication, and collaboration among all the key actors involved in the electoral process.

While attendance at Tuesday’s event is strictly by invitation, INEC confirmed that the session will be broadcast live on major national television networks and livestreamed across its official social media channels for public viewing.
