The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command have arrested a man, Zayyanu Halilu, after officers caught him raping a 12-year-old girl inside a parked vehicle at the Airport Bridge Taxi Park in Abuja.
The incident happened on October 2, as officers from the Anti-Kidnapping Unit who were on a routine patrol noticed a navy blue Volkswagen parked with fully wound-up, tinted windows.
The police became suspicious because the car was shaking. When officers approached and opened the doors, they found Halilu assaulting the minor. They arrested him on the spot and immediately rescued the young girl.
The police after conducting their investigation, revealed that the suspect had reportedly lured the child to the same vehicle on multiple occasions. She was rushed to the hospital for medical evaluation which later revealed that the 12-year-old is three months pregnant as a result of the repeated abuse.
FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, confirmed the arrest in a public statement on Saturday, revealing that the suspect constantly threatened to hurt the girl if she ever told anyone about the assaults. She also said:
“The victim is currently receiving medical care and assessment, while the suspect remains in police custody and will be charged to court upon conclusion of investigations”, Adeh said.
The FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, advised parents and guardians to monitor their children’s safety and daily whereabouts. The police also urged residents to stay vigilant and quickly report any suspicious activities around public space.
