Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has pledged to spend all his official holidays inside Nigeria, by visiting states overwhelmed by insecurity like Zamfara and Borno, if he wins the 2027 presidential election.
Obi made this statement during his Independence Day address in Abuja on Thursday, explaining that taking this approach would allow him to travel across the country, connect with everyday citizens, and assess the security and economic challenges facing different communities.
The former Anambra State governor criticized Nigerian leaders for taking leisure trips abroad. He added that an elected president ought to stay grounded within the nation rather than spending time and resources overseas during holiday periods.
While speaking about his recent visit with his running mate Rabiu Kwankwaso to an internally displaced persons (IDP) camp in Ramin Kura, Sokoto State, Obi stated that the severe hardships faced by displaced families exposes the failure of the government.
“As I have always done, I will lead by example. In four years as president of this great nation, I will not spend my holidays outside Nigeria. My holidays will be spent in Zamfara, Borno, Kwara, Ebonyi, Edo, Ekiti, and other Nigerian states”, Obi.
He also promised that his administration would make governance measurable and accountable within its first year, and also prioritizing security so that farmers can return to their fields and children to their classrooms without fear of being attacked.
