The Federal Government has declared Thursday, October 1, 2026, as a public holiday across the country to celebrate Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the announcement of the holiday on Wednesday on behalf of the government.

He congratulated citizens both at home and in the diaspora on reaching the 66-year milestone since gaining independence in 1960.

Tunji-Ojo emphasized that national peace and stability are essential ingredients for economic growth and development. He urged Nigerians to emulate the country’s founding fathers by staying patriotic, united, and dedicated to building a prosperous nation for future generations.

“As we celebrate 66 years of our independence, we should always remember that there is hope for our country. Our diversity is our strength, and our collective determination remains the foundation upon which a stronger and more prosperous nation will be built”, Tunji-Ojo.

He added that President Bola Tinubu’s administration remains committed to delivering real development through its Renewed Hope Agenda.
