The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of preventing the opposition party from displaying campaign billboards across the state.
Salihu Tanko Yakasai, a chieftain of the ADC, raised the alarm in a recent Facebook post, claiming the state government is actively stopping his party from using outdoor advertising to reach voters.
According to Yakasai, the current administration is using state power to silence the opposition. Yakasai warned the governor via his post to remember that political power does not last forever.
“Those you claimed oppressed you yesterday are now under your authority, but you do not know where Allah may place you tomorrow,” he wrote.
Adnan Mukhtar Tudun Wada, an aide to ADC governorship candidate Ibrahim Ali Little, described the alleged removal of their billboards as an attack on democratic freedom, stating that even under the previous administration of Abdullahi Ganduje, opposition parties were free to advertise as long as they followed the law.
An ADC candidate, Mussadiq Tofa, also revealed that an advertising company pulled down his campaign banners and refunded his money after receiving threats from the Kano State Signage Agency (KASA) that their operating license would be revoked if they left the opposition banners up.
However, KASA, through its Director-General, Comrade Kabiru Dakata, has denied the allegations, stressing that no political party is being targeted or discriminated against and explaining that any group that pays the appropriate fees and gets approval can erect billboards, while those put up without authorization will be removed.
