Suspected Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists have killed at least five people, including a local vigilante commander, in Wumbi community of Borno State, leaving scores with different degrees of injuries during an ambush which happened on Monday, September 21, 2026.
Wumbi is a farming community in Kala-Balge Local Government Area, close to the Cameroon border. The area had previously been deserted due to constant terrorist attacks, but farmers recently started returning to their fields under the protection of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) and local vigilantes.
According to local sources, the attackers arrived in large numbers on Monday night, heavily armed with rifles and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), targeting the vigilante commander, who had reportedly been a major obstacle to their operations in the area.
When the heavily armed men struck, most of the farmers fled for safety, but the vigilante commander stayed behind to fight off the attackers.
According to reports gathered the terrorists eventually surrounded and killed the commander, and before leaving, the attackers allegedly rigged his corpse with explosives.
Mustapha Babani, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the Bama/Ngala/Kala-Balge Federal Constituency, visited the affected community to express his condolences to the grieving families.
The Borno State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Kenneth Daso, confirmed the attack on Wednesday, assuring residents that the police are currently gathering more details, in order to prevent such attacks from happening in the future. News of the incident was delayed for days because the remote area lacks a telecommunications network.
