Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has spoken out after spending 220 days in detention to address the silence of political allies and friends he once stood by.
In a statement titled “My Relationships and the Aftermath”, the former governor addressed concerns raised by supporters about close associates who have turned their backs on him.
El-Rufai explained that his decision to support leaders and causes throughout his career was guided by his Islamic faith, Arewa upbringing, and personal conscience rather than a desire for praise or payback.
He stated that hard times naturally reveal who ones true friends are. He said while some former colleagues may choose to speak up, others have decided to stay quiet or distance themselves from him.
The former governor said he respects their right to make those choices and will quietly re-evaluate some of those relationships, but without any bitterness or plans for revenge.
“Over the years, I have stood by people and for causes I believed in, sometimes in difficult circumstances and at considerable personal cost…I bear no resentment towards anyone who chooses not to do the same for me. Ultimate accountability belongs to Almighty Allah, and I leave that judgment to Him, in this world and in the Hereafter”, El-Rufai.
El-Rufai, who has accused the federal government of a political witch-hunt, insisted that his only priority right now is keeping a clear conscience as his detention continues.
