Popular Nigerian music video director ThankGod Omori, better known as TG Omori, has revealed the overwhelming cost of treating kidney failure in Nigeria, warning that even a monthly salary of ₦1 million is not enough to keep up with dialysis bills.
Speaking during an interview on the Afropolitan podcast, TG Omori shared the harsh financial reality of managing kidney disease while waiting for a transplant.
The director explained that regular dialysis sessions cost between ₦50,000 and ₦70,000 at standard hospitals. However, at private clinics, the price jumps to between ₦150,000 and ₦200,000 per session. Because many patients need three sessions every week, medical bills quickly pile up to around ₦600,000 weekly.
Over a full year of treatment, patients waiting for a donor can easily spend up to ₦31 million, excluding extra expenses for medications, laboratory tests, and unforeseen complications.
He also opened up about the emotional pain of his failed organ transplant. According to him, his brother volunteered to donate a kidney after a nine-month donor search, but doctors later discovered that Omori’s body was rejecting the organ.
“My brother still has to live with only one kidney…Even though money can’t buy happiness, money can still buy some time”, Omori said.
Omori said that the financial burden leaves average workers helpless, stating that anyone earning minimum wage cannot afford even a single session. He call for urgent need for expanded health insurance coverage and subsidized treatment options for severe conditions.
