A fire broke out at a timber market near Jabi Masalachi in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Wednesday, destroying goods and materials estimated to be worth millions of naira. While no lives were lost, the fire consumed property and some residential buildings located close to the market.
The cause of the fire has not been officially verified. However, initial reports from residents state that the fire may have been triggered by an electrical fault, possibly due to fallen cables coming into contact with roofing sheets within the market.
The combustible nature of the wood and building materials stored in the market allowed the fire to spread like the speed of light, making it difficult to contain.
Traders and residents attempted to fight the flames, but the spread overwhelmed their efforts. Sources confirmed that some nearby residential buildings were also affected, forcing occupants to evacuate for safety.
Officials of the Federal Fire Service eventually arrived at the scene and succeeded in bringing the fire under control, preventing more damage to the residential areas.
The affected traders and residents have issued an appeal to the government for urgent financial and material assistance to help them recover.
