NELFUND warns Nigerian students against fraudulent loan portal

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) issued a public advisory on Tuesday, warning students and the general public about a fraudulent message circulating online that falsely claims the student loan registration portal is open.

The scam directs applicants to an unauthorized third-party link, which NELFUND has confirmed is a phishing attempt. The agency has urged applicants to ignore the message and refrain from submitting any personal information to prevent cyber fraud.

The message warns applicants to a suspicious, unofficial link http://gvly.xyz/Nelfund-Student-Loan that is designed to mimic the genuine portal. NELFUND confirmed this link is unauthorized and fraudulent, likely intended to capture personal data such as names, dates of birth, National Identification Numbers (NIN), and Bank Verification Numbers (BVN) required for legitimate applications.

‎The Nigerian Student Loan Initiative, administered by NELFUND, provides interest-free loans to eligible students in public tertiary institutions. The official loan application portal is accessible only through verified NELFUND channels.

According to an official announcement by NELFUND on October 21, the application portal for the 2025/2026 academic session was officially open from October 23, 2025, to January 31, 2026, creating a window of opportunity for scammers to target vulnerable applicants.

‎NELFUND emphasized the need for digital caution, reminding applicants that the integrity and security of the application process is paramount and urging them to only rely on information from its official website and social media channels.
