The Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar III, addressed misconceptions about Islam and Islamism at a book presentation in Abuja on Thursday, emphasizing that Islam seeks good governance rather than political power.

‎Speaking at the launch of “Scars: Nigeria’s Journey and the Boko Haram Conundrum,” authored by former Chief of Defence Staff Lucky Irabor, the Sultan clarified that Islamism is often misunderstood.

‎The Sultan recounted his past speeches on Islam and governance which were misrepresented in the media.

In 2019, after I spoke on what a good Muslim leader should do, some papers suggested I was opposing President Buhari’s second term. That was not true. We follow a code of conduct based on the Holy Quran, Hadith, and Ulama consensus…you cannot be an extremist and claim to be a good Muslim. Let’s be careful in how we discuss insecurity and work as one big family to build a better country – Sultan of Sokoto

Lucky Irabor, whose experiences fighting Boko Haram form the basis of the book, was commended by the Sultan for his service to Nigeria and the important role of documenting security challenges.
