A three-level structure under construction collapsed on Borno Street, Alagomeji, Yaba, Lagos, on Friday night, leaving one person dead and several others rescued from the debris. Emergency teams remain at the site continuing their efforts late into Saturday.
According to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) report on Saturday, the second day following the incident, rescuers retrieved the body of a male victim amid the recovery efforts. Eyewitnesses narrated that four individuals were pulled alive from the ruins around 7:46 p.m.
In an update posted on X, NEMA detailed that various emergency services including LASEMA, Fire Services, Police, FRSC, and NSCDC are actively engaged on site. The count of survivors remains at four, all in stable condition. While no new rescuations have been confirmed, there are unverified reports suggesting two more persons may be trapped beneath the rubble.
Further confirmation came later from the agency, affirming that a male body was successfully recovered as the mission to clear the wreckage continues. The Lagos State Fire Service also reported rescuing eight construction workers from the scene.
Government authorities promise thorough investigations aimed at preventing future disasters of this nature.
